Why Join the Community Farm?
The Community Farm provides you with healthy, locally-grown produce. Every week, delicious vegetables and berries are harvested and delivered fresh to your neighborhood. In return, our farmers receive a fair economic return and respect for their skills. Membership supports land that is cared for using sustainable organic and biodynamic farming methods. Everyone is nourished by re-establishing the vital link in our community between food, farms, and families. As a Community Farm member, you also help support the production of healthy food grown at Winter Green Farm for families in need.
Throughout the season, we welcome you to visit “your” farm and get to know the land that sustains you and the people who grow your food. You can walk the farm, talk to farmers, and attend farm events. Members also receive weekly notes full of seasonal recipes and farm news as well as our annual newsletter “Growing Together.”
The Harvest Shares
Eating locally in Oregon means that the harvest reflects the seasons. The first few spring harvests are light and consist primarily of cool-weather crops. Summer harvests are substantial, bringing juicy warm-weather fruits and vegetables. The fall is marked by a great abundance and diversity of crops. In a typical season you can expect to receive more than the projected amounts of some crops and less than the projected amounts of others as a result of weather and other factors. Please see the “Projected Crops” list for quantities and seasonal availability of produce.
A Community Farm Harvest Share is a great value compared with the freshness and quality of purchasing seasonal organic produce from stores.
Standard Season Harvest Share (includes delivery)
Florence $455.00
Reedsport $465.00
Coos Bay $475.00
(19 weeks, mid-June through mid-October)
Every week throughout the growing season we pack shares of the harvest for distribution to our members. A share feeds approximately two adults, or a small family, depending on individual eating habits. Many individuals choose to split a share with a friend. Standard Season Harvest Shares provide a large variety of traditional and specialty vegetables, as well as sun-ripened berries, and a jar of our own berry spread.
Late Season Harvest Share (includes delivery)
Florence $180.00
Reedsport $185.00
Coos Bay $190.00
(5 additional weeks, mid-October through Thanksgiving)
The Late Season Harvest Share offers five weeks of our fresh, local, organic produce following the conclusion of the Standard Season. This Harvest Share is larger to provide members with seasonal fresh greens and roots as well as a generous supply of storage vegetables to eat during the winter. Late Season members also receive salad mix from our greenhouses and a jar of our very own berry spread.
Produce Delivery and Logistics
Every week you will receive a box of fresh, organic produce from our farm. Between mid-June and mid-October, Standard Season shares are available for pick-up at a variety of convenient neighborhood sites throughout your delivery area. Five additional weeks of Late Season produce between mid-October and Thanksgiving will be available at a limited number of sites. All Late Season deliveries will be made on Friday.
Pickup sites are self-service. Please select one of the convenient site locations listed on the membership form. The cost of delivery to your area is included in the share cost. View delivery days and sites.
We deliver harvest shares in reusable plastic boxes. Members are asked to bring their own containers, transfer their produce, and leave the cleaned boxes at the pickup site.
What Happens if I Go on Vacation?
We offer three options whenever you are unable to pick up your box: 1) Gift your box to a friend or neighbor and arrange for them to pick it up. 2) Donate your box (tax deductible) to FOOD for Lane County by calling the farm prior to delivery. 3) Receive credit that can be applied to next year’s Community Farm membership ($14 per box for Standard Season Shares, and $22 per box for Late Season Shares). Notification 24 hours prior to delivery is required to receive credit.
Can I Split A Share With Another Family?
Our shares will feed 2 adults or a small family (depending on individual eating habits). Click here to see what's in a typical box each month. Many individual members choose to find a friend or family member to share their produce with, either splitting the produce at the site each week, or alternating weekly pick ups. Feel free to work out arrangements to suit your needs.
Financial Assistance
One of our values at Winter Green Farm is to provide fresh organic produce to people of all income levels. Included in the Community Farm budget is a per share donation to help provide partial financial assistance scholarships to families who would not otherwise be able to afford membership. We offer a number of options for those needing financial assistance, including subsidization and a variety of payment plans. For more information, please contact the farm.
Education Program
Educating people about where their food comes from, how it is grown, and the importance of eating locally are goals of the Community Farm. We have an ongoing education program that brings members of the community and local students from preschool through college to the farm for field trips. A small part of your harvest share subsidizes field trips. If you would like to make an additional donation to this program please include it with your payment.
FOOD for Lane County
Hunger is a problem in our community. It is all around us, it is far reaching, and it is complex. Hunger statistics in Oregon are dismal. Our community needs to respond to this crisis.
Beginning in 1996 Winter Green Community Farm joined with FOOD for Lane County, the local provider for our area’s food pantries and other emergency food providers, to provide Community Farm Harvest Shares to families in the Womenspace Transitional Program. This program was developed to help women and children who have left abusive relationships.
We also supply thousands of pounds of healthy produce for general distribution by FOOD for Lane County. Providing food for all members of our community will take all of us working together. Every donation, large or small, makes a difference. You can make that difference. Send a tax deductible donation along with your membership form to Winter Green Farm. Please make checks payable to FOOD for Lane County.
Who We Are
“A PRODUCTIVE FARM IN BALANCE WITH THE EARTH, HUMANITY, AND OURSELVES”
Winter Green Farm is nestled in the foothills of the Coast Range of Oregon, 25 miles west of Eugene. The 150 acres that we manage is a diverse mix of annual vegetables, herbs, and flowers; perennial berries, fruits, and herbs; pastures, oak groves, and riparian areas. We view our farm as a living organism. This means we strive to create a healthy farm-scale ecosystem. The vast majority of our fertility is produced on-farm, which we view as one sign of a farm in biological balance. The backbone of our fertility program is well-ripened biodynamic compost, green manure crops, careful crop rotation, and pasturage of our grazing stock. The health of our farm is reflected in the quality of our crops.
We feel it is important that we help connect consumers to the land that sustains them. Our Community Farm (a Community Supported Agriculture program), participation in farmers’ markets in Bend and Portland, and many field trips from classes and other groups help us toward this goal. Over the past 16 years the Community Farm has grown to over 525 member families. Members receive either 19 or 24 weeks of produce delivered to their neighborhood. On farm events for our members, weekly newsletters, and an expanded annual newsletter, help deepen member connection to the farm.
We have developed a close link with our local food bank. Through the combined effort from our labor and donations from the community we provide thousands of pounds of produce to those in need. Some of this food is distributed as memberships in our Community Farm for women and their children who are in the process of healing from abusive partner relationships.
In 2002 Winter Green Farm was honored with the Oregon Tilth “Producer of the Year Award” for our commitment to integrity in biologically sound and socially equitable agriculture.
Jack Gray and Mary Jo Wade started Winter Green Farm in 1980, and were joined in 1985 by Wali and Jabrila Via. Long-time employees Chris and Shannon Overbaugh manage our Farmer's Markets, as well as numerous other farm tasks. Over the years, many of our workers have remained with us for 4 to 10+ years. Their contributions, along with shorter-term workers have made the farm what it is. During the peak of the season there are as many as 25 people on our payroll.
Membership is on a first-come, first-served basis. When we receive your membership we will send you written confirmation and details about the upcoming season. Please do not hesitate to contact us at the farm office at 935-1920 or email to folks@wintergreenfarm.com. Please understand that we are sometimes away from the phone and will return your call as soon as we can.
Please help us by telling your friends about Winter Green Community Farm. We offer gift certificates for $25 off your share for every member that you refer to us!
